Steam Download Cache How to Clear It

Clear Steam download cache through its settings, prepare to sign in again, and tell cache cleanup apart from game verification and library storage.

On this page

Clear Steam's download cache through Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache in the desktop client. Steam says this does not affect currently installed games, but you will need to sign in afterward. Use it for a specific download problem or measured cleanup need, rather than expecting it to free the space occupied by your game library.

Prepare before pressing the button

Finish your game session and save your work. Make sure you know how to sign back into the Steam account you are using and can complete any authentication it requires. If you cannot currently sign in, postpone the operation.

Keep a note of the original problem: the affected game, the exact error, and whether it occurred during download, installation, or launch. A cache reset is easier to assess when you have a concrete failure to retry. “Steam is slow” is too broad to tell whether this one change helped.

If your goal is recovering storage, open File Explorer > This PC and record free space on the affected drive. Also note where the game is installed. A cache operation and a library occupying another drive should not be treated as the same storage measurement.

Let an active installation finish if it is making progress. If a download is stuck, record its status before resetting the cache. Avoid clearing caches repeatedly while a download is already moving normally.

Clear the cache through Steam settings

Use the desktop Steam client on Windows, not the Steam website in a browser:

  1. Open Steam and select Steam in the top-left menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Downloads.
  4. Find Clear Download Cache and select the button.
  5. Read the warning and confirm only when you are ready to sign in again.
  6. Follow the client prompts, then sign back into Steam.

There is no undo button for the cache reset. Steam can acquire the required cached configuration again from its servers, but this does not restore the exact previous local cache. If you cannot reconnect and authenticate, stop before confirming.

Valve's download cache instructions confirm the menu route and the sign-in requirement. Button wording can vary with client language; the operation to look for is clearing the download cache inside Downloads.

Do not substitute deleting the Steam installation directory. The named button is the supported scope for this task. Leave game folders, account data, and files you cannot identify alone.

Retry the original task and measure the result

After signing in, retry the affected download or launch once. Compare its behavior with the error you recorded, rather than making several other changes before checking whether the reset helped.

For a storage-focused cleanup, inspect the same drive's free space again. Other downloads or game updates can change that number while you work, so avoid treating every difference as a cache saving. There is no fixed amount of space that this procedure should recover.

If the download now works, stop troubleshooting that problem. Repeated cache resets are not necessary just because the button exists. If it still fails, preserve the new error alongside the original one so the next step has useful evidence.

A game that starts successfully does not prove every unrelated Steam issue is repaired. Keep the conclusion limited to the task you tested.

Download cache and installed games are different

The cache reset handles download-related cached state. It is not an uninstall operation and is not a request to remove your whole library. Steam's installed games remain a separate category of storage.

Likewise, clearing the download cache should not be described as removing every Steam cache. Shader caches and other application data have different roles. Do not promise that this button clears them all or improves frame rates.

Save files and workshop content also need their own identification before any manual deletion. This procedure gives no reason to browse unknown folders and treat everything under Steam as disposable. Stay within the scope of the client's named action.

When the game library is the large space consumer, deciding whether to keep, uninstall, or move particular games is more relevant than repeatedly resetting download state. Review Steam's storage interface before changing files yourself.

If downloads still fail

Valve's update and installation troubleshooting guide treats cache clearing as one step among several. Read the actual error and choose a follow-up that matches it.

For an installed game with a suspected file problem, Steam offers Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Verification can replace files it finds need repair and may download data; back up local modifications you want to retain before using it. Steam does not provide an undo button for such replacements.

Verification and cache clearing solve different tasks. Do not run verification on every game as a routine way to reclaim space. It may acquire files that the game needs instead.

For persistent errors, record the game, error text, drive location, and the steps already tried before contacting Steam Support. Do not start disabling security software or deleting library folders simply because the first reset did not work.

A full game drive needs a storage plan

Open Steam > Settings > Storage to inspect the libraries Steam knows about. Steam has its own feature for moving games between libraries, so use its interface when considering a game move rather than creating a manual junction first.

A move requires a suitable destination with enough space. Before doing it, read the client's choices and ensure the destination drive will remain available when you play. Treat moving a game as a separate operation and check that it launches afterward.

If you only wanted to clear the download cache, you can stop before any move. A functioning download does not require reorganizing your library, and a cache reset cannot create the space needed for an arbitrarily large new game.

For Windows caches outside Steam, see the Windows cleanup guide. The Delivery Optimization cache guide describes a separate Windows download mechanism with its own cleanup procedure.

Reviewing launcher caches with AiCleanDisk Pro

AiCleanDisk Pro includes Steam download and shader caches among its auto-clean items, with game items available through Show all items. Each item has a risk level and a confirmation dialog; review which cache is selected before cleaning. System-drive scanning and auto clean, except AI auto-clean, are free; other-drive scanning, AI analysis, AI auto-clean, and folder moving require a license. Licenses cost $4.99 for 30 days, $16.90 for six months, or $19.90 for one year, with one-time payments and no automatic renewal.
